🍊 Healthy Food Spotlight: Oranges

This month, we’re highlighting oranges, a fresh, in-season fruit that supports overall wellness, especially during the winter months. Oranges are a strong source of vitamin C and dietary fiber, both of which support immune function, digestion, and more stable blood sugar absorption when eaten whole. One medium orange provides approximately 70–90 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and about 3 grams of fiber, which helps slow glucose absorption and supports gut health (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2023).

Whole fruits like oranges have been associated with improved blood sugar regulation compared to fruit juices because fiber helps prevent rapid spikes in blood glucose levels (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 2022). This is especially important in Alabama, where approximately 13.4 percent of adults are living with diabetes, placing the state among the highest in the nation for diabetes prevalence (American Diabetes Association, 2024).

Oranges also play a role in oral health, which is closely connected to diabetes management. Vitamin C supports gum tissue health and wound healing, and adequate intake is associated with reduced risk of gum inflammation and periodontal disease (National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 2022). This is significant, as individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk for gum disease, which can in turn make blood sugar harder to control.

Quick Wellness Tip:
Choose whole oranges instead of juice to get the full benefit of fiber for blood sugar support. After eating citrus, rinse your mouth with water to help protect tooth enamel while still enjoying the nutritional benefits.
